Yogurt has long been touted as a perfect snack and healthy food. It’s prepackaged in an individual serving, it has calcium and protein, and it’s tasty. However, many yogurts aren’t all they’re cracked up to be and contain less-than-savory ingredients. Here are the top four ingredients you should be looking out for:
- Carrageenan – Made from seaweed, scientists have warned that’s its not fit for consumption for nearly 4 decades. Carrageenan has proven association with gastrointestinal inflammation, and higher risks for intestinal ulcerations, lesions and even tumors.
- Dimethylpolysiloxane – A silicone oil, also known as “silly putty” – this is actually used during yogurt processing. You won’t typically see it on the label for this reason, as processing aids aren’t required to be listed by manufacturers, even if there is residue left behind.
- HFCS-90 – A toxic, addictive variation of the original high-fructose corn syrup, HFCS-90 is much more concentrated and potent.
- Neosugar – This highly processed form of sugar can’t actually be broken down by the human digestive tract. It’s often marketed as a “prebiotic” or “natural dietary fiber” – but it’s not. Manufacturers also call it “Fructan” or “Nutrasugar”.
Basically, if it sounds like it was probably made in a lab, you probably shouldn’t be eating it.
